1017 Squadron is one of the oldest Air Training Corps squadrons in the country, being formed during the second world war in 1941. The original location was nearby in Sling Lane, where in the early 1950s we were lucky enough to possess a Mark XXI Spitfire as a gate guardian. LA228 saw action in the war with 91 Squadron where it was used to hunt for submarines in the North Sea.
The Modern Day 1017 Squadron
Our home for many years has been at Dukes Meadow, next to Great Malvern Primary School. Our modern building houses several classrooms, a crew room and a parade hall complete with an air rifle range. We run a large number of activities each year including drill, leadership, first aid, DofE, adventure training, shooting, sports and, of course, flying.
Naturally, all of our staff are trained and DBS cleared to the enhanced standard. We encourage our cadets to become leaders and instructors during parade nights, a skill they'll be able to take into later life.
